How can I find volunteer opportunities in my community?

I'm a high school student in Braintree, MA who would like to sign up for volunteering for the elderly in my community (nursing home). My problem is that I have no means of transportation, other then walking. My question is, is there a facility in my neighborhood that i can apply to?

I don't know for sure whether you'll be able to walk to any of the opportunities that are available, but I'd recommend you contact the Braintree Council on Aging (phone number at this link) and ask about their volunteer positions. It sounds like they have a bunch of different ways you can contribute. Here's an excerpt from the website:

"We have many different positions available. Some of the positions are: Clerical, Receptionist, Crafters, Escorts, Friendly Visitor, Group Facilitators, Hostess, Meals-on-Wheels drivers, Newsletter delivery drivers, and van drivers for medical/social appointments. Let us know what your expertise is and we are sure we can find a volunteer position to match your skills."

You might not have specific expertise related to any of these positions, so you can just let them know what interests you most. The ones that require driving might be off the table, but I'm sure positions like friendly visitor or receptionist are open to interested high school students.
