Writing Test Retake Yielded Lower Score: Which Score Do Colleges See?

I have a student who took the ACT writing test twice. Her first score was several points higher than her second score. She wants to know if the higher of the two scores, the more recent of the two, or an average of the two scores is reported to colleges. Answer?

For the most part, your student will only have to send her first score to schools, which means only the higher of the two scores would be reported. The only exception to this is if a college your student is replying to requires all ACT scores sent; in that case, schools will see both scores (they won't be averaged by ACT, Inc. or anything like that).
